CTI corners a market for Mil rotor repairs

In the fourth quarter of last year, Grand Prairie, Texas-based Composite Technology, Inc. expanded its international rotor-blade repair operations with the signing of a service agreement with Russian manufacturer Kazan Helicopters and the opening of a joint-venture repair station in Brazil.
In October, CTI president Michael Topa signed an agreement with Kazan to provide worldwide rotor-blade repairs for Mi-8s and Mi-17s. The agreement authorizes CTI to provide repairs for Kazan-supported helicopters in North America, Asia and Europe.
Already established as a worldwide repair center for Agusta, Bell Helicopter Textron, Eurocopter, MD Helicopters, Schweizer and Sikorsky helicopters, CTI operates rotor-blade repair centers in zix countries on five continents. According to Kazan marketing director Valery Pashko, this worldwide support capability was an important factor in signing the agreement.
"Improving support is our focus," said Pashko, "and we strongly believe that CTI will help us add to our support structure." Pashko also cited CTI's extensive experience in rotor-blade repairs and its quality record as ingredients for success.
Topa said that CTI will establish "a dedicated field repair team to support Mil operators, since most repairs on Mil blades can be performed on-site." Topa says that the field repair team members will come from CTI's repair facilities in the U.S., United Kingdom and Singapore, and that these facilities will maintain spare parts "to ensure turn time for rotor blade repairs."

CTI recently expanded its worldwide repair facilities, opening a joint-venture repair station at the Jacarepagua airport in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in December. The Brazilian operation, Composite Technology do Brasil Ltda (CTBL), is the product of CTI and Lider Taxi Aereo S/A Air Brasil, an aircraft charter, sales and maintenance company catering to executive and corporate aviation. Lider is the Brazilian representative for Bell Helicopter Textron, Learjet, Honeywell and Rockwell Collins.
[...]"The opening of CTBL is a tremendous benefit to helicopter operators in Brazil, who no longer have to face tremendous costs and delays by sending their blades to the United States." [Topa]
Topa says that on average, operators incurred freight costs of $5,000 and paid Brazilian tax of 34 percent on labor and 4 percent on parts from blades coming in from the U.S., in addition to a time delay of up to two and a half weeks due to shipping and customs clearance.
Currently an approved repair facility for various Bell and Sikorsky main and tail rotor blades, CTBL provides a range of rotor-blade services in addition to straight repair, including rotor blade sales, rental and exchange. Models served include the Bell 204, 205, 206, 212, and 412 and Sikorsky S-76. CTBL is seeking additional licensing and certification from Bell Helicopter Textron, Sikorsky and Agusta.
